In seiner Forschung konzentriert er sich auf die Biomechanik und funktionelle Morphologie von Pflanzen und Tieren in einer Vielzahl von Zusammenhängen, z.B. bezüglich Beutefang, Ausbreitung und Anhaftung. Darüber hinaus hat er ein starkes Interesse an der Abstraktion von Funktionsprinzipien für die biomimetische Übertragung in technische Strukturen und Materialien, um so zur Entwicklung „smarter“ Zukunftstechnologien beizutragen.
PD Dr. Simon Poppinga is senior lecturer and scientific director of the Botanical Garden at the TU Darmstadt, Germany. His research focuses on the biomechanics and functional morphology of plants and animals in a variety of contexts, e.g. prey capture, dispersal, and attachment. In addition, he has a strong interest in abstracting working principles for biomimetic transfer to engineered structures and materials, contributing to the development of smart future technologies.
